Attorney General Wilson Awards Second Round of Grants to Combat Illegal Dumping in Neighborhoods

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson today announced the awarding of more than $1 million in grants – the second round of such funding – to help communities statewide clean up illegal dump sites and prevent future unlawful dumping.

“Illegal dumping of solid waste and demolition debris not only creates eyesores in Ohio’s neighborhoods but also threatens the environment and puts an unfair burden on taxpayers, who are left to foot the bill for cleanup,” Wilson said. “This money helps municipalities get rid of a problem they didn’t create.”

The grants are part of the multi-pronged “Shine a Light on Dumpers” initiative, launched in 2023 to combat illegal dumping through enforcement support, public education and financial resources. They are funded with settlement dollars secured by Wilson’s office.

The first round of grants was awarded in April 2025.

The application period for the second round opened in the spring. Grants of up to $100,000 were available for cleanup efforts and up to $20,000 for signs, gates and other equipment to ward off future illegal dumping.

Demand for the funding exceeded $1 million, so applications requesting more than $100,000 were capped at $100,000 and all awards were then reduced by roughly 4.5% to allow the grant money to reach as many communities as possible. Several applications submitted after the deadline could not be considered.
